    Understanding Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and, in rare cases, Borrelia mayonii. These bacteria are transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks primarily belonging to the Ixodes genus. Ticks typically acquire the bacteria by feeding on infected rodents or other small mammals.
