How do I differentiate quality alterations from average ones?

Recently my friend and I got our suits altered by different people. He opted for some top professional while I got mine done from a newbie tailor at a much lower cost. But after comparing the two together, neither of us are able to tell much difference in the work. I wanted to know a way to spot quality alterations from ordinary ones, because I am pretty sure there must be something my friend and I are unable to identify.
