THE senior NSW police officer who went on stress leave almost a year ago after being criticised for his handling of the Cronulla riots is still off work and still being paid $220,000 a year.
The Sunday Telegraph has learned that police assistant commissioner Mark Goodwin lodged another medical certificate with the police force about three weeks ago.
It is believed this extends his time off work until at least October this year.
Mr Goodwin went on stress leave in October, 2006, after he was criticised in a report
written by former counter-terrorism boss Norm Hazzard.
Mr Hazzard was scathing about the force's handling of the violence in December, 2005.
Mr Goodwin publicly and emotionally rejected Mr Hazzard's criticism, saying he had not been given a fair go.
In a letter to then-Commissioner Ken Moroney, he said the Hazzard report was both "fundamentally flawed and false in fact''.
He also said: "It is with great regret and sorrow that I sit here on a Sunday, having had virtually no sleep for days, under immense pressure and stress, with a career and hard-earned reputation in tatters...''
He went off work but said at the time he would be back on deck within a week or so.
He has not been seen since.
The latest police annual report says Mr Goodwin's total salary package is $218,509.
It also lists one of his key achievements as being the commander of the "police operation following the riots at Cronulla''.
His long absence has become a matter of concern among senior police officers.
A significant number of them believe his response to the Hazzard report marked him as unsuitable for a senior leadership role in the force.
The State Government, including Premier Morris Iemma, has publicly supported him.
Several sources last week questioned why the matter had been allowed to drag on for so long.
I know there is a degree of frustration in senior ranks,'' said one police source. ``It is his medical certificate that is stopping him from coming back.
"At this time, it's his call.''
But there is a growing feeling that the matter should be resolved soon, because taxpayers are footing the bill.
"Everyone is being cautious,'' said the source. "Mark Goodwin himself is perceived as being a bit too precious.''
The sources pointed out that other officers criticised by Mr Hazzard had either continued working or had returned to work by now.
In particular, they nominated Superintendent Rob Redfern, who was the Cronulla local area commander during the riots.
One source said the police hierarchy was reluctant to say anything about Mr Goodwin in case he sued the force.

mad:
