Who should pay on a date? The guy or the girl? And why?

Some people say that the guy should pay so he's a gentlemen.
Others say that they both should split it or whoever does the asking should pay.
Should the girl expect her boyfriend (most of the time the guy is NOT even a boyfriend, just a male friend) to pay for everything?

I don't expect my bf to pay but he likes to pay all the time because he thinks he is a "big man". Sometimes I use some excuses to pay such as for celebration of some events with him.

"gentlemen" is just a excuss for women who don't want to pay(付出)

Miss_L : Why it is a must? I mean, if in a relationship, female side is earn more then male side. Is it fair? I haven't said that male side should not be a gentleman. But it is not a MUST.
